Time To Say Thanks
There is a group of our friends and neighbors who give a great deal of time, energy and talent
representing our neighborhoods on Dallas' boards and commissions. These volunteers work every
day on issues that effect our quality of life but they very seldom receive the recognition and
thanks they deserve. Next time you see one of the following folks at Starbucks, Carrabba's,
Casa Linda Cafeteria, Legal Grounds or a social event give them the pat on the back they deserve
for helping make our neighborhoods the most livable in Dallas:
Julie McKinney, Animal Services Commission; Sam A. Gillespie, Board of Adjustment; Jill Kotvis,
Cultural Affairs Commission; Donna Wigley, Community Development Commission; Bob Weiss, City Plan
Commission; Rick Warme, Commission on Productivity & Innovation; Todd Howard, Citizens Police
Review Board; Charlie Shapard, Civil Service Adjunct Board; Barbara Pittman, Environmental Health
Commission; Gloria Tarpley, Ethics Commission; Paul Schweizer, Judicial Nominating Commission;
Brian Keith, Landmark Commission; Jane Shouse, Library Board; Sheffie Kadane, Park Board; Cathy
Doyle, Permit License Appeal Board; Bert Holmes, Senior Affairs Commission, Tracy Kurts, South
Dallas/Fair Park Economic Development Board and Sam K. Gillespie, Youth Advisory Commission.
And one person who should not be overlooked is Scot Williams who has represented us on the
Graffiti Wipe-Out Task Force. There are additional volunteers doing duty on other assignments
that I will share with you in a future column.
Special Kudos
I was fortunate enough to attend a performance of "Kid Pan Alley" at Fannin Elementary School
recently. American Idol move over. These elementary school kids co-wrote and sang more than a
half a dozen songs under the artistic direction of Paul Reisler who resides in Rappahannock,
Virginia. Who helped unleashed all this student creativity? None other than Sara Wahl and Dan
Micciche from the Akin Gump law firm. Nice going.
At Woodrow's All Sports Banquet in May the Woodrow Class of 1966 presented its annual Land-Hyland
Scholarship to two deserving seniors who have demonstrated leadership in the classroom, on the
field of play and in the community. The recipients of the 2006 Land-Hyland scholarship are Miriam
Reyes and Zach Krimm. Miriam and Zach each will receive a $3,000 college scholarship.
